Foreign news agencies reported from Vatican City on March 1 that the Holy See issued a statement regarding the health condition of Pope Francis, the head of the Roman Catholic Church, who is currently at Gemelli Hospital in Rome, Italy. It was stated that he experienced “sudden breathing difficulties” on Friday afternoon, which led to vomiting and a rapid decline in his breathing.

The medical team provided urgent care by suctioning fluid from his lungs and administering high-pressure, high-purity oxygen through a device covering his mouth and nose. This update from the Vatican follows statements made on Wednesday and Thursday, indicating that Pope Francis’s health had “improved slightly” since Wednesday.
Pope Francis was admitted to Gemelli Hospital on February 14 for treatment of respiratory issues due to bronchitis, after experiencing breathing difficulties for some time. It was later revealed that he had early-stage pneumonia in both lungs.
